We believe in the power of sport. Right off the top, here are just a few of the many highlights from the year where sport was used as a vehicle for positivity.
- Our work with Immigration Services Association of Nova Scotia helped refugee families participate in sport and strengthen their connection in their new community.
- We helped to support and teach educators how to improve the delivery of physical literacy programs to Nova Scotia’s youth.
- Our partnerships with businesses and other non-profit organizations resulted in financial assistance to worthy initiatives including supporting hundreds of athletes across the province through the Support4Sport program, which is now in its 11th year.
- More than 200 Nova Scotian athletes, coaches and officials were celebrated for their achievements in sport at the Support4Sport Awards.
A message from the CEO
This was a very positive year for sport in Nova Scotia! You will see in these pages the variety of successful programs and services that we’ve led with the support and leadership from our membership of over 60 provincial sport organizations.
A special note of gratitude goes to the Province of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic as we collaborate more closely than ever before.
Sport Nova Scotia has countless partnerships who help to drive all aspects of sport throughout the province, especially the community sport organizations and thousands of volunteers. Another big thank you to our sponsors, especially the Nova Scotia Provincial Lotteries and Casino Corporation who bring us Support4Sport.
And as much as the past year has been great, we’re even more excited to be moving in to a new year with broader-than-ever stakeholder input helping to re-shape our strategic plan. Our incredible board of directors (highlighted in these pages) as well as our passionate and talented staff will continue to drive the sector to benefit all Nova Scotians.
Sport Nova Scotia operates numerous administrative services that are available to our members such as printing, mail/courier, computer networking, telecommunication, office space, meeting facilities, equipment rentals, desktop publishing, financial services, and general administrative services.
Sport Nova Scotia is contracted by the provincial government to provide administrative support to provincial sport and recreation organizations. Sport Nova Scotia provides subsidized services to active and associate members, as well as recreation organizations approved by the provincial government. In the fiscal period 2016/17, 73 organizations were eligible for subsidies. The pie charts below show the sources of revenue for the Administrative Centre.
The policy of Sport Nova Scotia is that costs associated with operating the Administrative Centre will be set at a level that ensures the operations of the centre, at a minimum, break even; and that any surplus will be used for the purpose of providing administrative services. In fiscal period 2016/17, the Administrative Centre realized a surplus of $17,793 that will be added to the accumulated surplus.
